Ok the deal now is on sunday it's 50% off the purple sticker or the orange sticker. Not everything will have an orange sticker. There was a tig machine there but it was still $400 after discount.
I picked up the 170 this morning for a grand total of $125. It had the cables but it did not have the gas hose or what I really need the other size drive roller. Looks like it was used for a very little bit going by the condition of the tip and the cords were clean as new. I really was hoping to find the next step up multipurpose machine as I could really use the tig.
Took it out to the shop and set it on the bench and rolled over my other machine with the tank on the cart. I hooked up the gas put a roll of wire in and started fiddling with it. Started up fine and would barely feed. Well I made sure the roller had the small groove on the inside but didn't read the numbers on it. Well it was a .030 groove and I am running .024 for body work.
I ended up removing the ball bearing and wrapping it in electrical tape to get some friction on the wire. It is sort of working but it's slipping. But it is enough to see if the machine is going to work at all.
I did just a few spots just to get it sparking then did a bead on some 16 gauge ish steel which was the old front floor support from my 66 mustang and only cleaned by rubbing a used roloc disc on it. This bead was the first bead I have done with it with no adjusting just using the guide on the lid. It did quite well and actually easier than my old welder would be to do the same.
I will see if Northern has the roller at the store teusday as I need to do more testing before the 5 day return period and HF does not carry the rollers or other consumables for these welders yet and the Northern tool welders use the same wire feeder as the HF machines. One thing I do hate is that it is not a designed for US market machine due to the switch being in the back. It's very easy to flip the 110/220 switch instead of the power switch.
I will update when there is more to add. Oh and that is a brand new unused Modine radiator from the 1990s in the background. It has some dirt dobber nests on it but otherwise it's fine. If anyone is interested in it let me know as I will be using an aluminum radiator.
