I had been wanting a smoker to "play" around with just to try with various meats. At a local Lowes, I found, on the shelf, a "special order" electric smoker that someone had changed their mind on and it was priced around $15. Normally around $125. Seems, it had been put on a shelf and not on the floor so everyone overlooked it. Meanwhile the price kept dropping and dropping. Small domed electric smoker (think R2D2 as my daughter calls it). I have used it quite a few times and it has delivered fantastic results. I have smoked several Boston Butts and the all turned out great. Each time, I used a different type of wood with various rubs and/or injections. If you are considering "playing" with smoking, start with a cheap smoker until you have had a chance to get an idea of what is involved. It is very time consuming and fairly labor intensive (can take 12+ hours). You can get an idea if this is for you before investing lots of money. For me, my little $15 smoker is all I need.
